The Samaria Gorge in Crete
Tue 17th September 2013
The Hike statrts at Xyloskalo 1,200 metres up on the Omalos Plateau in the White Mountains.
Mount Gygilos soars above at over 2,400 metres
The path zig zags it's way down to the gorge several thousand feet below
The mountains all around are spectacular,
The whole route is over pebbles and boulders and very tough on the soles of your feet
The spring water in the the gorge is crystal clear.
Mountains tower above you at every turn
4 km in to the walk and still going downhill
Here we are approaching the bottom of the gorge
Near the abandoned village of Samaria
The bridge takes you into the abandoned village, a few of the buildings are still standing
The walls of the gorge start to narrow.
and tower a thousand feet above you
This really is an impressive place to walk
Small wooden bridges help cross the river.
