River Hodder 3 Bridges Walk, approx 4 miles, (Easy)

I parked the car in a wide lay by just on the bend in the road by Lower Hodder Bridge. From here walk uphill to what was the Hodder Bank Inn, It’s now a big house, directly opposite take the footpath that passes two or 3 buldings before crossing a stile in the field.

Straight ahead with an ancient hollowed out path just on your left. Follow this down to a stile and a footbridge over a small stream. The muddy path then swings to the left on a gentle climb. A stile comes into view on the right hand side that takes us into a field. Follow the tree line on the left to reach a stile on to the road. Turn right and walk along the road for approx half a mile to reach a junction, straight on then about 50 yards passt the junction at the end of the trees take the stile on the right into the field.

Head diagonally across the field passing a couple of Oak trees heading towards the fence line on the steep bank of the river below. Follow the fence line, cross a stille through a small belt of tress and continue straight on eventually dropping down to the road at a stile next to Lower Hodder Bridge.

Turn right and cross the bridge. On your left is the ancient Cromwell Bridge built in the 1600’s. Immediately after the bridge turn right and follow the broad path along the river bank.

From here the route is pretty much along the river bank all the way back. As the river bends to the left, you approach the impressive Hodder Place. This was once the Junior school for nearby Stoneyhurst college. As you approach with river on your right the path starts to climb gently. Passing the massive stone walls of the Old school. At the top continue straight on descending into the woodland.

After crossing a stone bridge there is a 3 way footpath sign. Our way is straight on up the wooden steps. On reaching the top of this flight there is a path to the right which after about 50 yards meets an old stone cross overlooking the river below.

Turn left and head back to the original path which climbs agin up another flight of wooden steps. At he top, follow the path through a small wooded area with the river way down below on your right. At the end of the wooded area, the path turns sharp right and down more wooden steps into more dense woodland.

Half way down take the wide path to the left as it drops towards the river bank. From here, it’s a super walk along a wide and firm path that follows the river bank as it meanders it’s way back to The start at Higher Hodder Bridge.
